Model Context Protocol

An open protocol, introduced by Anthropic in November 2024, that standardizes how AI applications connect to external tools, data sources, and prompt templates through MCP servers.

Also called: MCP

Seed source: Model Context Protocol specification

An MCP server exposes tools the model can call, resources it can read, and prompts users can invoke, and any MCP-compatible client can use it without custom integration code. Anthropic donated the protocol to the Linux Foundation’s Agentic AI Foundation in December 2025.

MCP connects one agent to its tools. Communication between separate agents is a different problem, addressed by protocols such as Agent2Agent.
